As a medical provider myself, I actively seek out wellness supported in science and I'm so happy to know and be treated by Dr. Scher who believes the same! Dr. Scher is an incredibly passionate and talented acupuncturist with credentials that speak volumes! With her anesthesia background, she is calm, respectful of your medical history and incredibly talented with needles. After my first appointment, I already felt an instant burst of energy and sense of peace. I plan to be a regular patient and am so happy to have found someone I can trust to help me reach my wellness goals!

Dr. Scher's acupuncture treatments provided instant stress relief during a challenging time. As a board-certified anesthesiologist, her expertise and care were evident from the start. I felt reassured and in great hands throughout my sessions. Highly recommend for anyone seeking relief and well-being.

I went to Dr. Scher for fertility acupuncture. Immediately I knew I was in the best of hands, with her knowledge and compassion I felt completely cared for. Fertility journeys are stressful but my acupuncture sessions decreased my anxiety and improved my overall health and fertility. My feeling of wellbeing lasted long after our sessions. Dr. Scher knew exactly how to care for me and explained everything throughout, which added to my comfort. I cannot recommend Dr. Scher highly enough, and I will be forever grateful for the care she provided.

Meet

Dr. Lauren Scher

Hi, I am Dr. Lauren Scher, licensed medical acupuncturist, board-certified physician anesthesiologist, and the founder of Rebalance Acupuncture and Wellness. During medical training and residency, I became acutely aware of how people struggle with acute and chronic pain as well as chronic illness.

When I was pregnant with my younger child, I experienced significant low back pain that made even standing up from the floor difficult. After thorough research, I decided to try acupuncture for the first time.

It changed my life.

I had complete relief after a few sessions and the pain never returned!

I decided to go for further training so that I could help others the way acupuncture has helped me. As an anesthesiologist, I am well versed in pain management and worked on the Acute Pain Service at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. I knew many of the patients we treated would likely go home still struggling with pain and possibly require chronic treatment, including opioids. As a physician and acupuncturist, I believe the path to wellness should integrate both western and eastern medicine for optimal health and balance.

When I am not working you can often find me spending time with my family and friends, playing tennis, reading, or going for walks and exploring around DC.

I received my medical acupuncture training for physicians from the Helms Medical Institute, went to Georgetown University School of Medicine for medical school (MD) and did my residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where I was a chief resident.

Following residency, I worked as an anesthesiologist at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, where I was an assistant professor, cared for patients in the general OR’s, OB anesthesiology, and as part of the Acute Pain Service, where I performed nerve blocks under ultrasound guidance as well as inpatient pain management. I continue to work as an anesthesiologist at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC.

I am also trained in Mind Body Medicine and was a faculty facilitator for the residency program at Georgetown, where I was the Wellness Director.

I am currently licensed in both Maryland and Washington, DC.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and uses tiny single-use needles inserted into the skin at certain points on the body (acupuncture points).

It is a drug-free highly effective way to help with various health issues by clearing energy blockage and allowing the flow of qi.

(Qi translates to energy and/or life force. It is a transformation. It is not static; it protects, nourishes, and animates the body.)

Depending on the desired goal, different points will be selected and may be enhanced with heat or electrical stimulation. Acupuncture can be used both to treat or to prevent various conditions and can be be combined with Western medical treatments.

Traditional Chinese Medicine identifies energy channels called meridians that travel throughout the body. When these meridians become blocked, energy cannot flow appropriately causing symptoms of pain and illness. Acupuncturists place tiny needles within the meridians to open the energy flow and help the body to restore balance and qi.

Similarly, Modern Medicine recognizes points in the body where nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatics are located close together in fascial planes between muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Stimulating these points with acupuncture needles releases natural chemicals within the body that assists in healing and restoring homeostasis.

During your visit, I will discuss your medical history and health goals so that I can customize your treatment. I will answer any questions that you may have and discuss my recommendations and plan.

The number of sessions vary from person to person. Typically between 4-6 sessions are necessary for more acute conditions. For more complex or chronic conditions, a longer, more intensive treatment period may be required.

You can expect 1-2 sessions per week initially and then gradually decrease the frequency as you enter the maintenance phase.

Some conditions do not require long term maintenance and others do. Every patient is different and we will work together to customize a plan that works for you and your needs.

  • Musculoskeletal pain/discomfort (both acute and chronic, perioperative)
  • Low back pain, joint pain, arthritis
  • Neuropathy/nerve problems
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Sinuses/congestion
  • Insomnia
  • Stress management
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Fatigue
  • GI dysfunction (GERD/IBS/IBD/Nausea)
  • Hormonal imbalances/perimenopausal symptoms
  • Women’s Health
  • Infertility/fertility
  • Lactation

This list is not exhaustive and acupuncture may help treat other conditions as well.

Cupping can be traced back to ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern cultures and uses glass cups on the skin to increase blood flow and relieve muscle aches and pains using suction. It can be used for muscle pain, relaxation, inflammation, and overall well being. You may experience some temporary bruising of the skin.

A small, smooth stone is used along the skin to improve circulation and reduce inflammation. This is to remove excess fluid and reduce toxins in the tissue, which can lead to improved collagen production.

Because the hormones and chemicals in your body are affected by the changes in energy movement, it is possible to have worsening of symptoms initially. You may also have changes in bowel habits, appetite, or emotional regulation. These will pass and may require a bit of rest after.

Some of the risks include bleeding, bruising, and very rarely pneumothorax, which is damage to the lung.

No, I do not write any prescriptions or order labs. Please make sure that you are under the care of a primary care provider or specialist. For certain medical conditions, clearance may be required from your primary care provider or specialist prior to treatment including imaging and lab tests. If your treatment is postsurgical or in the peri-operative period please ensure that you have been cleared by your surgeon for acupuncture. If you are not under the appropriate care at the time of your visit then your visit may need to be rescheduled at the discretion of the provider.

Initial Consult: $250
Follow-up Visit: $225

If it has been more than 3 months since your last treatment or it is for a new problem, a new initial consult will be required.

I do not take insurance, but I would be happy to provide you with a receipt or superbill so that you may submit it to your insurance yourself.
